It was a Soulful Weekend…

yoga

Thanks to all who participated in the Immersion weekend offered by Jess Jacobsen and me last weekend in Carbondale, Colorado. We did some inner exploration around our soul’s purpose and how to unlock our limitless potential, and it was exhilarating!  The mixture of lecture and practice turned out to be a winning combination that resonated with our lovely gathering of beautiful souls!

For those of you who couldn’t be there, we spent time together reviewing some of our “inner workings,” looking at why and how we get triggered, which hijacks or log-jams our peace and creative potential.  As neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux points out,

“human consciousness is the way it is because of the way our brains operate…emotions evolved not as conscious feelings, linguistically differentiated or otherwise, but as brain states and bodily responses….(and so)… Where is evolution taking our brain?”

Deutsch: Phrenologie

As it stands now, we are not very effective at turning off our emotional states once they are triggered. The good news is that it has been proven that through the strengthening of cortical connections to certain areas of our brains, we can begin to condition ourselves to start to step back and take a breath away from our emotional states, reducing the amount of charge these emotions can cause.

That’s great, Luann. But… huh? How do we strengthen those connections in our brains?

We do this by practicing mental focus (another proven fact). There are a plethora of ways that we can engage in these practices, including meditation, yoga, conscious walking, and more.

If you are inclined, please take some time this week to explore how your days are unfolding. Are you taking some time for yourself…I mean just for you?  Do you have a regular time set aside to renew and recharge? Have you considered or are you engaged in a daily meditation practice? Are you exploring your life purpose…and taking some moments to reflect on what you want…how you can serve? Just checkin…

Let’s hold hands and stick together. Believing in you!

Love,

Luann

Taking Back Our Emotional Well Being

Last week we continued our discussion on “the power of emotions over happiness” and shared insights from cutting edge scientists, who are merging science and spirituality. Today I’d like to discuss how our conditioning influences our emotions and provide a simple technique on how to begin to make permanent changes in patterns of behavior that cause challenge.

Among those participating in breakthrough studies on the brain (merging science and spirituality), is Dr. Richard Davidson, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin. “Dr. Davidson has unearthed some significant findings regarding how the emotion of happiness can be tracked in the brain. Davidson collaborated with His Holiness the Dalia Lama to study monks, who are experienced practitioners in meditation, having meditated ten thousand hours or more. These monks live in states of peace, compassion, gratitude, happiness, and well being…”(Excerpt from Happily Ever After…Right Now, pp.xxx, Prologue).

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 11.28.19 AM

Andrew Newberg, author of How God Changes the Brain, mentioned in last week’s post, states that, (  “…Focused attention (meditation, focused breathing, yoga, etc.) begins to build new neuronal circuits (brain patterns)…repeating a task, such as meditation or prayer, changes the synaptic activity at the end of a neuron and will eventually change the structure of the cell (forming new patterns). Such changes affect the way information is relayed to other parts of the brain.—pp. 33, How God Changes the Brain. Recall what Joseph LeDoux’s finding suggested: The struggle between thought and emotion might be resolved by a “more harmonious integration of reason (cortex) and passion (fight/flight/amygdala), and focused attention (meditation) seems to be a supporting link.

Perhaps you meditate regularly. If so, we would welcome your ideas and suggestions of what has worked for you. If you have never meditated and are interested in getting started, I encourage you to begin to practice it (simple steps below) and take note of any subtle changes that might occur in your level of stress or anxiety.  If you do, please keep us posted!

Suggested meditation practice for beginners this week:

Time commitment: 5-7 minutes daily (preferably upon awakening, though this can be done anywhere—even in the subway on the way to work)

Exercise:  The Breath and Focused Attention

Sit in a comfortable position. Focus on the “in” breath and the “out” breath. You could repeat the words “in” and “out” as you notice your breathing. Try not to change your normal breathing pattern.Your mind will wander. Come back to the breath. Practice this technique for five to seven minutes and try not to judge how well you believe you are doing. Meditation practice has been shown to have a cumulative effect. Just the fact that you are sitting there, committed to doing this is progress!

Next week we will continue the series with more information and meditation practice ideas. The goal: To change the chemistry of our brain, change the patterns that have allowed our reptilian brain to rule our emotions (and allowed the “fight or flight” mechanism to dominate), and to finally reach a higher (or more expanded) level of consciousness.

We can do this!

Love,

Luann

Let Go of Forever and Live for Now

Let Go of Forever & LIVE FOR NOW

It is time to make each moment beautiful!

It is time to make each moment beautiful! (Photo credit: GioPhotos)

“The only authentic responsibility is toward your own potential, your own intelligence and awareness-and to act accordingly… if you act according to your past, that is reaction… Response is moment to moment. It has nothing to do with memory, it has something to do with your awareness. You see the situation with clarity; you are clean, silent, serene. Out of this serenity, you act spontaneously. It is not reaction, it is action. You have never done it before. And the beauty of it is that it will suite the situation.” (Osho, 2003, p.32).

How can we give up our conditioned worries, fears and insecurities, while allowing ourselves to be with whatever is happening now? Staying focused more and more on this moment, instead of fretting over the past or worrying about the future, you will begin to notice some significant shifting in your awareness on what is really true. When you are no longer occupied by needless regret over the past or anxious anticipation of the future — you create an opening from your emerging wisdom for your full creativity, gifts, and talents to emerge.

As we continue to peel off the layers of dread and doubt that have kept us from noticing who we truly are, we might meet up with some of our old, outdated belief systems along the way. These will be reminders of how far you have come. And every single awareness that has assisted you in accessing your most expanded potential is permanently recorded. Nothing can change that. Further, once you begin to identify what you truly long for, stop grasping for it and simply allow it to emerge by letting go of any need to control — you will be endowed with treasures beyond your most favorable imaginings.

Love,

Luann

Peace Is the Way

The way to peace is to notice that peace is the way (Chopra, 2005).

Peace Is the Way

And this way to peace is quite simple, although it can seem otherwise. You do not have to make the experience of accessing peace difficult or tedious. Your consciousness is already ripe for a shift to take place in you — one where (when complete) you will always be operating from this peace of yours, which has heretofore seemed so cleverly to evade you. How do I know about this ripened state that is unfolding in you? Because you would not be attracted to this material if you weren’t ready for change.

Most of us are weary of being chained to the pain and pleasure cycle. Of course we believe our captor to be merciless at times. Actually, we have always had the power to release ourselves from this unfortunate pest. Remember our friend Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? Three clicks of her ruby red slippers and, poof — she was home! Just like Dorothy, we already have the formula to be taken immediately “home” to peace. We don’t have to go looking for it. It’s just that our fear-based conditioning has made it seem so complicated. So having some version of the Good Witch around to jog our memory can be quite beneficial. If we pay attention, those people, situations, events, and circumstances, replete with their reminders, are showing up. And as they do, it helps to keep remembering that peace is the way — while we are shown the way to peace.

Look for those people, situations and circumstances, and allow them to help you find your way to peace. Oh, and don’t forget to be one of them!

Love,

Luann

What You Seek Already Exists

Spotter

Spotter (Photo credit: Jay Aremac)

When we focus on and trust our insights and inspirations (which are the voices that guide us to fulfilling our passions and dreams), the urgent need to obtain security in another or outside of us will begin to melt away and eventually disappear. Widows who have learned to become dependent on their husbands, for example, often discover a multitude of inner strength, courage, and wisdom following the death of their spouse. The same is true of women who have broken up with their partners. As they move through the stages of grief, they are frequently astounded by the sense of power and delight that accompanies the process of developing their independence.

Sara made some important discoveries about herself while spending almost an entire year without a significant other. Even though she missed having a boyfriend at times, she realized that there were aspects about being single that brought her absolute joy. Her discoveries included learning about her dining preferences, what movies she liked, and when she wanted to stay home to enjoy a quiet evening alone. A few months into the experience, she began to notice a sense of fulfillment and joy that was unprecedented in her life. During this time frame, her career soared, and several friendships with both women and men flourished. When she started a relationship with Tim, whom she now describes as “the love of her life,” she was ready to meet him with her own ideas, strengths and hopes.

While single, Sara had chosen to create a rich, full life for herself and was then prepared to start a relationship with someone who could compliment her discoveries and share the happiness she was already experiencing. She recently commented, “I really unraveled some of my narrow views on what I thought it took to be happy, like thinking that it was impossible without a boyfriend. Eventually, I stopped waiting for someone else to complete me. That is when Tim showed up. Now, I am becoming more whole day-by-day, and even though I love and adore Tim, I know that he is not the answer to my happiness. I am.”

Unity Minister Susan Burnett-Hampson tells of the break-up of a significant relationship before she met her husband, Stan. “I had strong feelings for this man, and as we were parting, I realized that, the love is in me. It is mine. It will go with me. And this will attract a similarly high level of love. It may sound obvious, but the message this time was more profound. I really got it.” Susan’s connection and subsequent loss helped her realize that she was the source of true love. That love moved within her, wherever she was. Eventually, she took that love with her into a happy and fulfilling marriage to Stan.

In recognizing that the buck stops with us and that there is no one to blame for feelings of despair or credit with our happiness (except ourselves), we are creating the true foundation for lasting joy. Instead of focusing on what we can get somewhere else, or who we can blame if it doesn’t happen, let us be willing to become immersed in the delight of our own being. And when we decide to do so, no longer are we bothered with the fading fears and outdated messages of need and want. Eventually, our Royal Essence will emerge as our only reality, and we will then be emancipated from the prison of lack and insufficiency.

Love,

Luann

The Magic of Majesty

HangingLake_byLisaJeyDavis

© 2005

As you diminish your victim thoughts, words, and actions, you will begin to tap into the magic of the Queen/King. Like the heroes/heroines in fairy tales who had to accomplish some seemingly impossible task, you will be able to set aside apparent “real” limits and move steadily to your goals coming from the inspirations of your heart. The Grimm’s (fairy tale) girls, for instance, invariably did what they needed to do — they got a good night’s sleep — and allowed the guidance of their inner wisdom to handle the rest. The internal womb of stillness will always point us to peace. Our only task is to listen and then follow where the insights direct us.

You are not a victim and you are not alone. Your inner happiness is always available to you. When your partner appears (or is already there), you see her/him as someone who can help to enhance your already happy state. You do not depend on her/him; rather, together you learn the art of interdependence. Your commitment is to growth, authenticity, truth, love, joy, and a foundation of compassionate, honest communication. Each of you knows that there are no guarantees for ever after. If, at any time, your peace is interrupted, you are willing to share and negotiate. And when there can be no resolve because he/she refuses to negotiate with you, or you with your partner, you know what to do. Move on.

Love,

Luann
